The Long Span Footbridge Connecting Hoi Ying Estate and Hoi Tat Estate Won the Structural Excellence Awards 2022

In recognition of its excellence and innovation in architectural and engineering design, the Long Span Footbridge connecting Hoi Ying Estate and Hoi Tat Estate (the Footbridge) has recently won the Grand Award in the Infrastructures and Footbridges category of the Structural Excellence Award 2022 organised by the Structural Division of the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers (HKIE). This is the second award received after the ACEHK Annual Awards 2021 – Overall Best organised by the Association of Consulting Engineers of Hong Kong for the Footbridge.

The Footbridge is approximately 145 metres long with main span of an approximate length of 111 metres – the longest one in public housing estates. Since the Footbridge spans over the very busy West Kowloon Highway and Lin Cheung Road with 16 road lanes as well as three major MTR Corporation’s lines including Tung Chung Line, Airport Express Line and West Rail Line, contract team adopted an innovative design and construction method together with the application of advanced Building Information Modelling (BIM) and 3D Laser Scanning technologies to overcome the various site constraints and construction difficulties. The construction safety and quality of works were enhanced at the same time.

The elegant aesthetic design of the Footbridge has perfectly integrated with the surrounding environment and facilitated the future sustainable development of the community. The Footbridge also enhanced the connectivity of Hoi Ying and Hoi Tat Estate with the community, and the accessibility to the public transportation facilities. It greatly shortened the journey for residents to travel to the Cheung Sha Wan waterfront area.
